Butch Adams has been drawing since he could pick up a pencil. He was raised on a steady diet of Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch, Slurpees in Superhero cups, Japanese Giant Monster Shows, Saturday Morning Cartoons, and boxes of donated comic books. His first published work was in a little comic called “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” way back in 1987. Since then he has had his work published in various comic books, newspapers, books, television, and even a feature film. His love of monsters and his need to create have nearly driven him insane at times but with the right lighting and music we keep him rather calm. The last few years he has been painting huge character pieces.

Ray Magsalay is a bonsai specialist, boasting the largest bonsai in California, with 40 years of devotion. After retiring from the State Parks department of California, he remains a horticultural consultant with nearly 50 years in the industry.

As an artist, Magsalay has participated in 130 art exhibits with his assemblages of found items. He has shown his work from Carmel in 1980 to the Museum of Modern Art, and recently at Loft in Pacific Grove and now at The Alternative Café. Last year, students at CSUMB honored him by filming a documentary about his art. Many have considered his work “out there,” but he merely calls himself “an observer.”

				$5650. Available, call 831-583-0913 or email gallery@thealternativecafe.com

Viewing a painting by Paxton is like opening a door to someone's dream. Each image is a special secret unto itself. The viewer is invited to project his or her own personal ideas about what is happening or what might happen.

In the surrealist tradition, Paxton's work stems from the artist’s own dreams and certain techniques he employs to reach his own subconscious. A new twist on traditional surrealism. Paxton has coined his work “Midrealism”.

Paxton has most recently created a mystical fantasy world called Tridoria, which brings to life a unique host of races, characters and environments. Based more on imagination than dreams, these new works of art add a fresh style to Paxton's already vivid body of work.

  • Devon Ryan

Inventive, curious, and talented, the late Devon Ryan worked in the motion picture industry for over thirty years in the field of Special make-up effects, which included animatronics and prosthetics.

A collection of “Scaryonettes” (a creepy version of marionettes) is one of his latest and last adventures into a new field. He created each piece from scratch: sculpting each piece in clay, making the molds and casting them in materials he deemed best. He endowed each character with part of his own quirky nature and love of life.

Free and open to the public.

I guess she just got a little too close. She'll never do that again! Tammy was the second Scaryonette that Devon made, the first being a Doppelganger of our friend Shannon Lark. She is an up and coming "scream-queen" and dances with a chainsaw that spews blood. Nice girl.

This is another one you don't want to see anytime soon. He is Devon's tribute to Terry Gillam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen."

Oh, she's a naughty nun! Pregnant with a demon, Devon hinged her swollen belly so it can be opened and the little bugger taken out and "admired"…can you say "warped" boys and girls?

Scary woman, that one may be a little deranged, one might say. Just look at her eyes and you know some thing's amiss. The left breast opens to reveal her heart, which can be taken out. Devon loved autopsy scars, having almost had one himself, twice!

Devon always had a fascination with the TV series, ‘The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.’ He actually played the part of Ichabod in an independent film called 'Fulfilled.’ When asked what it felt like to "finally be an actor," Devon replied, "With six inches of make-up and no lines, I wouldn't know!"

Her name is Atropos, where we get the word for atrophy. She is in a state of flux with her barbed-wire halo and mummy/Goth attire. Pray that she does NOT answer your prayers any time soon!
